July! July! What happened to those last hopeful days of June, when summer stretched out long like a sunning horse?
Did you make a list for summer? Did it include the following: read Tinkers (Paul Harding, short and beautiful), read Dan Chaon's Await Your Reply? Read sixteen more books in the hammock and call it homework?
I've been waking early and full of hope--hope you have, too. I don't mean to squander those minutes, but I do enjoy the animal parade when I walk the dog--bunnies, squirrels, teenagers going to summer jobs, a thousand thousand ants eating a scrap of apple, a red-bellied house finch on a mission to rid a lawn of seed.
What are you reading? What are you writing? How will you squander your extra summer hours?
